"If Agreement Prohibits Award of Interest for Pre-award Period, the Arbitrator Cannot Award Interest" : Supreme Court

There are many cases which are related to Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996.


In an important legal proposition enunciated at page 11 of Sri Chittaranjan Maity v. Union of India [2017] GCtR 2524 (SC) it was held thus : - 

"If the agreement prohibits award of interest for the pre-award period, the arbitrator cannot award interest for the said period."
