The Story of Moot Court Competitions in India

*The Scheme of Earning : The Story of Moot Court Competitions in India*

L is a law firm ; it has a case where they received Rs. 40 lacs as fees. They don't know research. They reach out to a businessman who runs law college.

Law college  (LC) and L decided that a Moot Court Competition be organised on the issue centred around the case that L is dealing with and L is incapable of doing research. However, LC puts a condition that LC will charge money from students who will participate in the competition so that LC can also make money from it. Law Firm L says that copyright on content will be with L and not with students who had done the research [in contravention of Copyright Act, 1957].

Now, a notice is given that students can participate in the Moot Court Competition. It's not free. Further, the copyright of students will also be illegally taken away by someone else.

Law college puts a fees of Rs. 10,000/- per team and ensures that not less than 20 teams participate. This ensures earning is around Rs. 2 lacs.

Prize money was fixed at Rs. 25,000/- ; 15000 ; Rs. 10,000/-.

Out of the 20 teams, the team which was close to organisers was given the trophy of winners. Rest others were given certificates. The team which actually did the best memorial was not given any recognition and that prize was also given in a pre-determined manner to people close to organisers.

In this entire scheme, law college has been able to earn more than Rs. 1 lac by organising the competition. Law firm has been able to illegally obtain someone's copyright and intellectual property and has also earn the fees by getting large work done by law students.

Law students who were close to organisers were also to make money and gain undue recognition. Others simply paid and did tour on parents' money and did free work for law firm.
